The Role of Individual, Familial, Social and Religious Factors in Extramarital Relationships of Married Women and Introducing a Treatment Model Based on the Related Factors: A Qualitative Study

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the individual, familial, social and religious factors related to women's extramarital relationships in the form of a qualitative research in order to provide a new therapeutic model. The present study was done in two stages: the first stage was carried out by using qualitative content analysis method with inductive approach. In the second stage, a paradigm of extramarital relationship treatment was developed using the common elements method. Data collection was carried out in the first stage in three steps: The first step was a systematic review of the articles related to the factors influencing extramarital relationships via qualitative analysis method. The sample group consisted of 28 related articles published in Iran and was selected by purposive sampling method. In the second step, a semi-structured qualitative interview was conducted with 17 women with extramarital relationship experience and sample members were selected using available sampling method. The third step entailed qualitative interviews with couples and family experts about the causes of extramarital relationships using the Delphi method. Finally, based on the information obtained from these three steps, a new therapeutic model was designed and developed to treat women's extramarital relationships using the common elements method. According to the findings from first stage of this study, 64 factors influence women's extramarital relationships which were divided into four categories of individual-personality, familial-educational, cultural-social and religious-belief-related factors. In the second stage, based on the identified factors influential in women’s extramarital relationships, the new treatment model was presented as a paradigm. This model was designed and developed by using common elements of effective treatments for extramarital relationships. The results showed that among the four identified categories related to women's extramarital relationships, the individual-personality and socio-cultural categories were the most important ones influencing women's extramarital relationships. Subsequently, the familial-educational and, religious-belief-related categories affected women’s extramarital relationships, respectively. Furthermore, based on the common factors in effective treatments used for extramarital relationships, a model for treating women's extramarital relationships is presented, which, given that this model takes into consideration the factors affecting women's extramarital relationship, can have a good potential for treating them.
