Informal economy, women's housekeeping and influential factors: a case study of married women from Ahwaz, Iran

Abstract

Calculating the value of women's housekeeping and its proportion in national production and welfare improvement is one of the most crucial matters for economists and sociologists in today's world. Nevertheless, Iranian women have various social functions; but they have an important role and responsibility in housekeeping which is a free of wage and inappreciable job. Thus, it indicates women's vast participation in economic affairs of the family. The purpose of the present study is to calculate the value added of married women's housekeeping job (housewife or employed), considering some influential factors, and explaining the meaning of informal economy in family section. In this study, researchers applied survey method, usingrandom sampling method to choose married women in Ahwaz,and interviewed 384 people. After completing the final questionnaires, the data was gathered and analyzed by SPSS software.According to the analyses, the total additional value produced by women is 29183724140 Rials annually. The results of the study reveals that the variables "women's age", "marriage duration", and "number of family members" have distinctly significantimpact on explanation of "housekeeping value added". Among the independent variables, "number of family members" has the most proportion on explaining the changes of housekeeping value added
