A Study on Internet Use, Based on Self-Efficacy and Gender Stereotypes among University Students of Isfahan

Abstract

The main purpose of present study was to identify the perceptions and perspectives of boys and girls university students towards Internet utilization and to determine the kind of their internet usages. Another purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between the subscales of attitudes including students’ self-efficacy and gender stereotypes with their type of Internet usages. For this purpose, 404 students from both Isfahan University and Medical Sciences University were chosen by using stratified random sampling method. Semi self-made questionnaire included 3 parts: a) self-efficacy scale, b) gender stereotypes and c)type of Internet usage.Findings indicated that there were significant differences between girls’ and boys’ self-efficacy beliefs and gender stereotypes. This means that boys compared to girls had higher level of self-efficacy beliefs and they had lower level of negative stereotypes attitudes toward Internet usages. Results of this study also indicated that there was a significant relationship between the self-efficacy and stereotypes attitudes with students’ Internet usages. This means that the students who had lower level of negative stereotype attitudes toward internet usage and had higher level of self-efficacy beliefs; had used various services of Internet. Although, the above situation existed for both genders, but boys compared to girls, used different kinds of Internet services
